These Are The States In America Leading The Way In Solar Power Battery Storage

by Jeremy Hufft

America is rapidly increasing its electricity production from solar. Over the past decade solar generation has grown more than eightfold, offering virtually unlimited potential while producing little to no pollution. As costs continue to decline, solar has the potential to replace fossil fuels. However, solar and other renewables generate only about one-fifth of the nation’s total electricity, highlighting the need for further expansion.

A major challenge of using renewable energy is its variability, as it fluctuates by the hour, day, and season. In contrast, people consume energy in predictable patterns that often don’t align with peak solar power generation. Fortunately, advancements in energy storage technology, such as battery storage, provide a reliable solution.

How does battery storage work?

Energy storage systems capture excess renewable energy and store it for later use when demand rises, releasing the stored energy to consumers as needed. These systems use batteries to store electricity, whether in large utility-scale installations or smaller residential and commercial setups.

Battery storage offers flexibility as its primary advantage by helping utilities meet peak demand more efficiently, reducing strain on the grid, and providing backup power during outages. When combined with renewable energy sources like solar, battery storage enhances grid stability while increasing the integration of clean energy.

Several U.S. states are driving innovation by integrating renewables like solar power with battery storage, strengthening grid reliability, and accelerating renewable energy adoption.

California

California dominates the solar power and battery storage market. The Moss Landing Power Plant in Monterey County operates one of the world’s largest lithium-ion battery storage systems. Vistra Corp expanded the facility to 750 MW/3,000 MWh by August 2023 and plans to grow it further. Additionally, the Edwards Sanborn Solar and Energy Storage Project delivers 864 MW of solar energy alongside massive battery storage, reinforcing California’s commitment to clean energy.

Texas

Texas continues to expand its solar and battery storage infrastructure. Energy companies and utilities are developing large-scale storage projects to support the state’s growing renewable energy sector. By investing in battery storage, Texas improves grid reliability and maximizes the efficiency of its solar power capacity.

Other states are beginning to replicate the success of Texas and California. Based on recent trends and new policies designed to drive energy storage growth, these four states are emerging as leaders in battery storage.

Nevada

Nevada remains a leader in solar energy storage. The Gemini Solar Project, a 690 MW AC solar plant paired with 380 MW of battery storage, strengthens grid stability and increases the availability of renewable energy. Ongoing investments in battery storage ensure Nevada continues to expand its clean energy capabilities.

In 2020, Nevada’s Public Utilities Commission set a goal to reach 1 GW of battery storage capacity by 2030. This decision accelerated battery storage deployment across the state, driving significant growth over the past three years. In 2021, SB448 expanded renewable energy tax credits to include battery storage, further boosting investment and keeping Nevada on track to meet its target.

Nevada has also led the way in alternative energy storage solutions. The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Plant in Tonopah pioneered a thermal energy storage system that allows solar power generation, even at night. Despite some challenges since its launch in 2016, the project continues to deliver clean energy around the clock.

Arizona

Arizona is making bold strides in solar power storage. The Sierra Estrella project in Avondale generates 250 MW of solar energy while storing 1,000 MWh in batteries. These advancements support Arizona’s long-term renewable energy goals and help stabilize its power grid.

Hawaii

Hawaii has invested heavily in battery storage technology despite not setting specific targets. Earlier this year, the Kapolei Energy Storage facility on Oahu began operating, adding 185 MW of capacity to the grid. This project stands out for its size and status as a standalone battery storage system, highlighting the value of large-scale energy storage. Additionally, Hawaii’s Battery Bonus program encourages residential solar battery adoption by offering incentives to homeowners.

Massachusetts

In 2018, the Massachusetts State Legislature set a goal to reach 1,000 MWh of energy storage by the end of 2025. By early this year, reports confirmed 569 MWh of installed capacity. While battery storage growth has fallen short of expectations, upcoming projects suggest momentum is building. In August, Massachusetts and other New England states secured a $389 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to invest in energy storage and transmission.

Each of these states is shaping the future of renewable energy by advancing solar power and battery storage integration. Their efforts are setting new sustainability standards while building energy resilience across the U.S.
