We just finished up this expansion system. There was a small solar system existing on the house that we pulled off for a new roof, and we added on 11.6 kilowatts of new solar along with a battery backup system.

The payback on the investment is very good on this expansion style system on PG&E. Now this customer will get 15.2 kilowatts of backup power in the event of a grid outage, and unlike a generator, it won’t burn any propane. The sun will cause the batteries to continue to charge while the grid is down!
